Get to know our beautiful North Sea peninsula!
The Eiderstedt peninsula is about 30 km long, 15 km wide and lies directly in the Wadden Sea National Park and World Heritage Site in Schleswig-Holstein. It is especially known for its beautiful sandy beaches near St. Peter-Ording and the popular Westerhever lighthouse.
But Eiderstedt offers a lot more and therefore we would like to present you our TOP 5 destinations and activities.
01. St. Peter-Ording
At the western tip of the Eiderstedt peninsula lies the well-known town of St. Peter-Ording. Here you will find the approximately 12 km long sandy beach, which attracts countless tourists every year. In the historic pile dwellings there are five restaurants, which leave nothing to be desired with their local cuisine.
All in all, St. Peter-Ording invites you to stroll in the small stores or to stop for a bite to eat in the numerous cafés and restaurants. A side trip to the museum of the Eiderstedt landscape or the North Sea Amber Museum is also worthwhile!
02. Westerhever Lighthouse
The Westerhever Lighthouse is considered the maritime landmark of the peninsula and stands since 1906 on a dwelling mound in front of the village of Westerhever and is a great destination for the whole family. You can reach it by car or, more conveniently, by bicycle.
If the exhibition in the two former keeper's houses is not enough, you can climb about 160 steps to the viewing platform and enjoy the unique view of the mudflats and the sea.
03. Tönning's old harbor
The old harbor of Tönning is one of the most beautiful sights in Eiderstedt. The small town with just 5,000 inhabitants is also called the "gate to the peninsula" and was once an important trading center. You should definitely stroll along the old harbor, enjoy the maritime flair and visit some historic houses, such as the Skipper’s House or the imposing Packing House - here the historical importance and wealth of the town of Tönning becomes clear.
04. Wattenmeer National Park
The Wadden Sea stretches along the North Sea coast from the Netherlands via Eiderstedt to Denmark. The Wadden Sea is not only part of the National Park of Schleswig-Holstein, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009!

A visit to the Wadden Sea is especially worthwhile for nature lovers, as countless animals and plants live here in a peculiar habitat shaped by the ebb and flow of the tide.
05. Dikes
The first dikes in Eiderstedt are already more than 900 years old and served the inhabitants and their cattle then as now as a kind of protective wall against storm tides and high water.
The dikes are especially beautiful to explore during long walks or by bike.
